Frugal Friday: Buying Healthy Ham Inexpensively

My husband can't eat regular ham because he watches his cholesterol numbers pretty carefully. Ham wasn't at the top of the healthy meats list that we got from the dietitian! But I do have a few recipes that call for a little bit of ham to flavor them. My bean soup recipe is yummy, but without the ham, it's just not the same! I certainly don't want to buy a ham -- or even one of those small ham chunks found near the hot dogs -- just to flavor my soup.

Instead, I head to the deli. We discovered the Smithfield Lean Generation line of lunchmeats, and the ham is perfect for flavoring my soup. It's also incredibly lean, so hubby can eat it too. My deli will cut me off a 1/4 pound slice so that I can cut it into smaller bits for my soup. It works just like regular ham without all the fat. And it's much cheaper to buy that little bit of ham than it is to buy a whole ham!

Great idea! So often I'd like to have just a little bit of ham for a recipe.

I do this often when ham is on sale at the deli counter.
