Saving and Giving has moved to savingandgiving.net! I hope that you'll all join me over at Saving & Giving's new home. I'm planning some fun giveaways to kick things off. I'm still working on the site, and I'd love to hear your input. Let me know which features you want me to keep. You can email me at savingandgiving@gmail.com. If you're currently an email subscriber, you shouldn't see any change in your daily email newsletter. I switched the feed over so that you should continue to receive your daily updates.

A Time to Give - September 10

Last weekend, my mom let me know about a radio commercial that she heard. It was sponsored by Goodwill, and it was a cry for help. Goodwill stores desperately need merchandise. I don't think I've ever heard them advertising like this before, so they must be in pretty serious need. My guess is that our current economic situation has more people heading to Goodwill before they hit the retail stores.

Well, news of this ad sent me to my closet. Oh goodness.... It's almost embarrassing! I couldn't believe what I found. There were so many different sizes and styles of clothes there. There's no way that I'm going to ever wear most of it! In fact, I usually only wear about 20% of the clothes that I own.

Why do we hold onto clothes that we no longer wear? Maybe it's in hopes that a certain size will fit again. But if that's the case, then wouldn't I rather update my look with new items? Maybe it's because certain pieces of clothing bring back memories. Why not journal those memories and pass the clothes on to someone who will wear them? Whatever the reason for hanging onto clothes like this... I've decided to put an end to it around our house.

This week I will be cleaning out our closets... and taking no prisoners. This is going to be the most serious purging of clothes that I've ever done. Check back next week to see the pictures and my tally of what I was able to give.

If you have unused clothes or household items, would you consider dropping them off at Goodwill? In fact, why don't you email me pictures of what you were able to gather up for Goodwill (or another charity if you don't have a Goodwill near you)? I'll report back next week with any pictures that I receive. This organization does a great deal for the community, and I'm proud to support them!

Now it's your turn to share your ideas for sharing, giving, and being generous.

You can participate in a couple of ways. If you're a blogger, write a post about a way that you've been able to give. It can be something simple or something out-of-the-ordinary that you did. It can be something from this week or from last year. Don't think of it as bragging... It's a way to encourage others to take action and be more generous! A few guidelines for bloggers:
  • Please add a link to Saving and Giving so that your readers can find everyone's ideas all in one place.
  • Make sure the link that you add here takes people directly to your A Time to Give post, not the main page of your blog. To do that, publish your post, view your blog, right click on the title, and copy the shortcut. Then paste that shortcut in as your URL here.
  • Bloggers who link to other posts or their main pages will have their links removed. This eliminates confusion for others who are looking for ideas on how to give.
  • Please do not link to giveaways, contests, or ads.
  • Feel free to use the image above in your post. It's not mandatory, but you're welcome to it!

If you're not a blogger, you can participate too! Simply click the comments link below this post, and leave your ideas there. I would love to hear from you!

If you have any questions about A Time to Give, please feel free to contact me at savingandgiving@gmail.com. I look forward to being inspired by your ideas on giving! And stop back each Thursday for a new edition of A Time to Give.

Jennifer, thanks for making us aware of Goodwill's desperate situation. It is pretty shocking, to say the least! I definitely need to clean out my closet, too.

I left my link for a simple way to give during September for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Thanks for the opportunity!

I need to do some closet clean-up. I'll set a goal of doing a closet or dresser a day. We donated our sofa last week after we got a new one. They were very happy to receive it. The guy said they rarely get sofas in good shape.

That's great, Katy! I like the paced out way that you plan to get it done. Less chance of burnout that way! If you can take a picture of what you donate, send it to me. I'll include it in next week's wrap-up.
